The question I'm asked more than any other is how to regain certification after letting your RO status expire. Sometimes the answer is easy; if you've been expired for six minutes to six months, I'll send you a 10 to 15 question exam. Provided you get a passing score, I'll be more than happy to reissue your credentials and you'll be back on track once again. If you've been expired for 6 months or more you'll need to take the long version of the exam (consisting of 50 questions). These exams can be mailed, faxed, or sent via regular snail mail to anyone who requests one and we'd be happy to have you back in the NROI family.
However, there are cases where it's not quite so simple. If you've been expired for a long period of time, it will be necessary for you to take the seminar over again. It's important to remember that this is not a punitive measure against range officials for failure to recertify, but a necessary step in maintaining our sterling safety standards. Over the years, USPSA and NROI have seen a lot of changes -- such as the addition of three new divisions and multiple rules changes. It's more important than ever before that our range officials are kept up-to-date on those changes and are able to roll with the punches. It's simply not realistic to think that after a long period of expiration, a 10-15, or even a 50-question exam will bring even the most seasoned official back up to speed.
We appreciate our cadre of dedicated officials who give so much of themselves and their time to promote safety within our sport. We couldn't do what we do without you and we would love to have you back if you're interested in renewing your certification, so please don't get discouraged. We'll do whatever we can to get you the necessary exam, help you find a seminar in your area, or even help you get one scheduled for your area...if it should come to that. But whatever you do, don't give up.
