I'm a new RO/CRO, having just completed the course this year. How do I renew my certification for next year?
As long as your membership with USPSA is current, NROI will automagically send you a review exam for recertification prior to your certification expiration date. There is no need to contact us or request an exam, the process is all automated once you become certified with NROI.
It's getting pretty close to my expiration date. Are you sure you're going to send me an exam?
Range Officer retention is an important goal for the USPSA/NROI. We'll make every attempt to get your recertification exam out to you prior to your expiration date, but here's some things you can do to help out: Make sure the email, phone number and physical mailing address we have on file for you is accurate and up-to-date. If you move, be sure to tell us about it so we can update our records and get the exam to your new address.
Okay, you said you would send me the exam. I never got it and now my certification is expired. What gives?
We're far from perfect. The postal service is far from perfect. A hundred and one things can go wrong from our office to your front door. We will make every attempt to get your exam to you in a timely manner; well before your expiration date is even close. However, if that doesn't happen and it looks like you might expire before your exam arrives, it is your responsibility to let us know. Give a call or drop us an email at:
nroi@uspsa.org if you suspect your exam should have arrived already and didn't so we can check on it and set it right.
I forgot to change my address or lost my exam or was abducted by aliens and now my certification is expired! Help! What can be done?
Because retention is so important to us, we don't want to lose you. We know life gets in the way sometimes; that's why there's a grace period. As long as you haven't been expired for more than six months you can still take the regular recertification exam and regain certification.
The aliens were pretty fond of me. I've been expired for more than six months. What do I do now?
If you've been expired for more than six months, but not more than a year, you can still regain certification by taking an exam. It just won't be the same exam you received initially. Contact us at via email at:
nroi@uspsa.org and we'll send you the long version for renewal.
Okay, but the aliens, they sort of took me as their leader - I was so popular. So, yeah I've been expired more than a year. Is there any way I can get recertified now?
It is possible to regain certification after being expired more than a year, but it requires taking the course over. This isn't a punitive measure, but a safety issue. Range Officers would need to find or schedule a class in their area and Chief Range Officers can do the same, or they may take the Correspondence Course, if desired.
Finally! I've got my exam and I'm working on it. But I'm really stumped by a few of these questions. Can I get some help over here?
If you get stuck on any part of the regular recertification exam or the long version of the renewal exam, just give us a call or
drop us an email. We'll be happy to put you in touch with one of our fantastic instructors. They'll talk you through any confusion over rules, procedures, wording, etc. It's not cheating, it's an open-book test and we would prefer that you walked away from the exam with a firm understanding of the material rather than just the ability to plug in the right answers in order to pass.
Okay, I've found the answers, but there's only a tiny line provided for them. Do I need to quote the entire section written out by hand in order to get the points?
No, the space is small because that is all you should need. Most questions require only a yes, no, or short answer for the answer portion and the rule number is sufficient for the rule citation portion. There is no need to copy out the full text of the rule verbatim.
I'm satisfied with my answers, anything else I should know before I return it?
Be absolutely certain to double check the exam for the following things before sending it in:
- Is your name, member number and contact information on the exam?
- Did you answer each question with both the answer AND the rule citations required?
- Is your writing legible?
You'd be surprised how many certifications expire annually simply because exams were returned with no identifying information or the information provided was illegible. Furthermore, many officials who fail the exam do so simply because they neglected to complete all the questions on the exam. Don't let this happen to you. Give it one more thorough check before sending it in.
I've checked and re-checked. I'm ready to send it. But wait! Along with my letter there was this membership renewal form on the cover letter. I just renewed my membership last week. What kind of scam are you people trying to pull here anyway?
The renewal form on the exam cover letter is simply a courtesy. It's just a reminder that your NROI certification is only valid as long as your USPSA membership is current, so if you're expired or are due to expire, you might consider using the enclosed form to renew. If you are already current or have recently renewed, do nothing. Just disregard the form on the letter. There is
NO fee to renew your certification with NROI. Only send the form and fees if you need to renew your membership with USPSA. If this is the case, you may also
renew online.
I think I'm ready to send it in now, but I've lost the reply envelope you sent me. Where should I send it?
Exams may be faxed to 360-855-0380 or emailed to
nroi@uspsa.org.
You can send it snail mail to:

What happens after I send my test in?
Once we receive your exam we'll get it graded and send you a letter confirming whether or not you passed.
I got a letter saying I passed, but it didn't tell me what I scored or which questions I missed, if any. How come?
We recertify thousands of range officials annually. It would be very costly and take a great deal of time to send personal results to each and every one. However, those officials who really want to know can send a self addressed and stamped
business-size envelope in with their exam and we will return it after grading.
My letter says I didn't pass. Does that mean all my hopes and dreams are dashed against the rocky cliffs of despair?
If you receive a letter stating that you did not receive the required score for recertification we will also send you a new exam for another shot at passing. If you have trouble with the questions or rules, please contact us and let us know. We are here to help. We can put you in touch with
one of our instructors for some remedial training or just talk you through whatever may be confusing you right over the phone. We are very invested in your success and would hate to see you give up.
I sent my exam in some time ago, but still haven't received my letter. What's up with that?
Due to the large volume of exams received daily, we may experience peak times when there are delays in recertification. If you just sent your test in two weeks ago, chances are good that it's still in queue, waiting for processing. We'll get to it, I promise. However, if it's been months and months and still no word -- you should probably call or email to follow up.
Remember, we want to do everything we can to help you remain a certified Range Official within the NROI, but ultimately the responsibility lies with you. If you haven't received an exam it's your responsibility to follow up as to why. If you don't receive results from an exam you sent back, the onus is on you to contact us to find out what happened. With thousands of officials to track annually, there's just no way we can call each and every one individually to hold their hand through the process. We'd love to, but it's just not realistic. Reach out to us if something doesn't seem right and we'll do everything we can to help get it back on track.
